by H.M. Hoover (Tor Books)
Description:
From StarScape.com
When Toby stumbles upon Orvis, an obsolete robot, he is about to shut himself down...forever. Toby knows how Orvis feels: no one wants her either. A spacer all her life, her too-busy-for-Toby parents have packed her away to school on Earth. But when her domineering grandmother decides to send her to school on Mars, Toby rebels. With Orvis and her only other friend Thaddeousa lonely castoff toothe trio set off in search of sanctuary with her great-grandmother. But to get there they will have to cross The Empty.

A first-rate adventure, based on provocative conclusions about present trends.
    --Parents Choice
A fine science fiction novel with an appealing heroine, a strong plot [and] a successful depiction of an artificial intelligence that is humorous, likable, and believable.
    --School Library journal

My daughter and I read this book and we both loved it. I agree whole heartedly with the previous reviewer's comment about especially enjoying the interactions between Orvis the robot and the children. This is a fun well written adventure that anyone (robot fan or not) will enjoy. My daughter wants a sequel.

4.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.0   An enjoyable read for kids and adults

I picked up this book at the local library for my kids (10 and 11). I started reading it and was very pleasantly surprised. The plot is bearable, but I especially enjoyed the interactions between the children and the robot. Their conversations were fun to read and at times thought provoking. The developing relationships between them felt quite natural. I'll be encouraging my kids to read the book.
